MSAVA (Malaysian Small Animal Veterinary Association) formerly known as Small Animal Practitioners Association was formed in the year 1988 when a group of Indo Pakistan Veterinary graduates mooted the idea of forming an Association for Continuing Education and for looking into matters concerning Private Practitioners.

The first informal gathering was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel during the same year and a pro term committee was formed to register the Association with the Registrar of Societies. Then in the year 1991 the Association was officially approved and its pro term committee became its first executive council.

The association is currently involved in Continuing Education Programme Development and organizes annual National Scientific Conferences. It is the main Association involved in companion animal practitioner's issues and acts as an advisor to government bodies regarding companion animal issues. It is affiliated to Veterinary Association of Malaysia. It is a member association of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association and Federation of Asian Small Animal Veterinary Associations.

MSAVA is formed with the following objectives

  • To honour, promote and foster the interest and advancement of all those who are concerned with the art of the practice of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery.
  • To inculcate a stronger, meaningful and more active fellowship amongst the members.
  • To uphold the dignity and ethics in the practice of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and maintain high standards of professional conduct.
  • To inform, liaise, and educate the public with regards to matters pertaining to the welfare and well-being of companion animals with special reference to preventive medicine and disease control.
  • To inform, educate and assist the Government, Local Councils and relevant authorities with matters pertaining to the practice of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and disease control.
  • To promote and foster Animal Health and Animal Welfare and work closely with all agencies and authorities committed to the care and welfare of animals.
  • To carry out such consultative and investment activities as is necessary for generating sufficient income for the running of the Association.
