Sebastiaan (Bas) van Nimwegen graduated in veterinary medicine at Utrecht University in the Netherlands (2006), performed an Honors Program (2004) and finished his PhD on laser and minimally invasive urogenital surgery in dogs and cats (2008). After an internship and surgical residency at Utrecht University Bas became diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2013. He currently works as assistant professor of companion animal surgery at the department of Clinical Sciences of the faculty of veterinary medicine in Utrecht, leading the oncologic and minimally invasive surgery section which is implemented in a multidisciplinary Animal Cancer Centre. His main research focus involves multidisciplinary translational development of a minimally invasive image-guided treatment approach for inoperable tumours with radioactive 166-holmium microspheres in animals and humans. Bas is involved in several clinical research projects on minimally invasive surgery, endocrine surgery, and hi-tech oncologic treatments and contributes to several international veterinary surgery textbooks.

Byung-Jae Kang, DVM, Ph.D., DAiCVS, is an Associate Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University, Republic of Korea. With a background in Veterinary Surgery, he completed his Ph.D. dissertation on Bone Healing and Regeneration using Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Dogs with Bone Defects. Dr. Kang's research interests include orthopaedics and neurosurgery in small animals, focusing on innovative techniques for bone repair. He is a De Facto Diplomate of the Asian College of Veterinary Surgeons and has extensive experience in both research and clinical settings, including positions at Seoul National University and Kangwon National University. Dr. Kang is committed to advancing veterinary surgical techniques and education, serving as an AOVET Faculty member in Korea.

He has worked for Nihon University as an assistant professor since 1999. He was a charter diplomate of the Japanese College of Veterinary Surgeons (JCVS) in 2009. Since 2015, he has been working as a professor of Veterinary Surgery in Nihon University. His duties include education, clinical research, and practice at the university hospital. A total of 4 grad students and 2 residents as well as 62 clinical trainees working for private hospitals belong to his laboratory. He has been focusing consistently on soft tissue surgery in small animals. One of his majors is surgical oncology, especially for liver, adrenal, gastrointestinal, pancreatic, prostatic, and intrathoracic tumors. Additionally, he highly experiences endoscopic surgery and interventional radiology including percutaneous transvenous coil embolization and transarterial chemoembolization. To date, he vigorously has approximately 250 surgical cases per year and a total of 81 published scientific papers.

A graduate of the Melbourne Veterinary School (1989), Stewart is an Associate Professor (Small Animal Surgery) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne and also works in private specialty practice at Southpaws Specialty Surgery and Referral Hospital in Melbourne.

After several years in mixed dairy cattle and small animal practice in Victoria, he moved to Hong Kong and worked there for the next 10 years. During this time, he developed a broad range of surgical experience and completed the ANZCVSC Membership examination in small animal surgery.

He moved to Fort Collins, CO, USA in 2003 and completed an ACVS Residency training program in Small Animal Surgery and a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Colorado State University (CSU). Stewart became a Diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 2007 and was an Assistant Professor faculty member at CSU.

He returned to Melbourne and joined the University of Melbourne in 2012. He is a registered specialist in small animal surgery and the author of over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications and several book chapters.

Stewart’s primary clinical interests are in the fields of surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery and interventional radiology as well as orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery. He enjoys teaching surgery to DVM students and residents and regularly presents continuing education lectures and workshops to veterinarians.
